DBU: A Case of National Football Identity

How DBU managed to increase fan loyalty for the Danish national team.

Denmark – 2019 – Becoming the ticketing provider for the Danish national team through DBU (Dansk Bold Union)  was an important, yet challenging milestone for NewC. Engaging with a national team instead of a club team required strategic adaptation from both sides of the table – a task that DBU in collaboration with NewC managed well.

With more volatility in fanbase structure, DBU faced challenges regarding reattendance at games in Parken Stadium. The solution? A subscription model to boost fan engagement, attendance, and matchday revenue. The goal was to drive constant attendance to the stadium regardless of team performance and game importance. It was crucial for DBU to establish a strong relation to national team fans in the long term. 

DBU launched a subscription model with priority access and exclusive benefits for loyal national team fans, and hence boosted subscription and engagement. The model includes exclusive ticket access and discounts to fans. Not only did DBU manage to increase fan attendance through this model – but also enhanced economic growth and return on investment. The results of the subscription model? A 237% growth in membership over the course of 4 years. Stadium sell-outs 13 consecutive times from 2021-23. An overwhelming 133% increase in revenue
